Several interesting events are scheduled for the upcoming weeks at the Medical Center.

  

Tuesday, Aug. 20

​Schwartz event to shed light on substance abuse risk, resources

Doris Whitaker, UMMC pastoral services director, will facilitate the Schwartz Center Rounds "2019 Series, Are We Too Busy?" discussion, "This is Us: Shedding Light on Who is at Risk of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and Resources for Recovery," from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20, in room CW106 of the Classroom Wing.

Dr. Saurabh Bhardwaj, assistant professor of psychiatry, Reginald Funches, diversion control officer, Kim Horn, surgical intensive care unit nurse manager, and Dr. Ann Kemp, professor of family medicine, are scheduled to speak during the event.

JH faculty to compare GPCRs, gut metabolites; renal, CV function

​Dr. Jennifer Pluznick, associate professor of physiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland, will give the UMMC Department of Physiology and Biophysics presentation, "Novel GPCRs and Gut Microbial Metabolites in Renal and Cardiovascular Function," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21, in room CW106 of the Classroom Wing.

LSU professor to explore energy balance, obese pregnancies

Dr. Leanne Redman, professor and director of reproductive endocrinology and the Women’s Health Laboratory at Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Louisiana State University, will give the Mississippi Center for Obesity Research, the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research and the Cardiorenal and Metabolic Diseases Research Center Grand Rounds presentation, “Great Expectations! Understanding Energy Balance to Advance Management of Obese Pregnancies,” at noon on Thursday, Aug. 22, in room A035 in the School of Nursing building.

M.D.-Ph.D. candidate to explore God's existence

Dr. Shannon Pittman, professor and chair of family medicine, will serve as the discussion leader for the next Health Disparities Journal Club meeting, “Breaking the Prejudice Habit: Mechanisms , Timecourse and Longevity," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, in conference room D on the second floor of the student union.

Dr. Lisa Stempak, UMMC assistant professor of pathology, director of clinical pathology, section director of microbiology and serology and laboratory director at the Jackson Medical Mall, will give the Department of Pathology Grand Rounds presentation, "Tissue is the Issue: How the Pathologist Can Help the Surgeon Collect Better Specimens for Microbiology Culture," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, in classroom R354 (upper amphitheatre).

Carroll Professor of the Hand, chief of hand microvascular and trauma surgery in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and professor of surgery at Columbia University Medical Center, will give the J. T. Davis Hand Lecture Series presentation, “Chronic Scapholunate Instability Injury: The RASL Procedure, 25 Year Perspective,” from 6:45-8 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, in room N 318 (3A).

Dr. LouAnn Woodward, UMMC vice chancellor for health affairs, is scheduled to speak at the fall faculty meeting set for noon on Tuesday, Oct. 15, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Woodward will provide an update for the Medical Center and faculty with 20 years of service will be recognized. Flu shots will be available before and after the meeting from Student and Employee Health. Lunch will be available on a first-come basis.
